Dozens of middle school and high school students from around Ohio participated in the 17th annual Saxophone Festival at Wright State University’s Creative Arts Center on Dec. 10.

The all-day festival gave students the opportunity to create music in small and large ensembles and attend masterclasses to learn more about the saxophone.

“It’s really cool to see different ways to play the instrument,” said Kyle Colaric, a sophomore at Miamisburg High School and festival participant.

Attendees worked with members of the Wright State faculty, current music students and alumni who specialize in soprano, alto tenor and baritone saxophones.

“It was a great opportunity to put my future major to use,” said David Brown, a first-year music education major who attended the festival last year while in high school.

The festival concluded with a performance recital that showcased the students’ hard work and new skills they learned during the day.

“We hope the students love what we’re doing here,” said Frankie Wantuch, music professor and festival instructor. “Hopefully they come study with us and if they don’t hopefully, they had fun while they were here.”
