Band festival brings hundreds of young musicians to Wright State

Bandfest

Wright State University Library issued the following announcement on Feb 22.

Middle school and high school musicians sharpened their skills during the Honor Band Festival, a three-day event hosted by the Wright State University School of Music.

The festival included 225 participants from middle schools and high schools and 20 band directors from around Ohio.

“It’s really cool walking in this morning and hearing all the wonderful sounds from the high schoolers and middle school bands that are playing,” said Dan Honaker, adjunct instructor in the School of Music.

Participants worked with three guest conductors, one clinician teaching leadership workshops, attended master classes given by Wright State music faculty members and performed in concert on the last day of the festival.

“Playing with other tuba players that are actually interested in playing tuba is awesome,” said Elijah Grubb, a senior at Fairmont High School.

The weekend also included an opportunity for high school seniors to audition for acceptance into the School of Music.

In addition to hosting honor bands and festivals, the School of Music presents more than 100 concerts, recitals and master classes every academic year in Schuster Hall. Most of these events are free and open to the public. A complete list can be found on the School of Music website.
