City of Green, Ohio issued the following announcement on Dec. 14.
The City of Green was awarded a grant from MWCD (Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District) for the Boettler Park Rain Garden Installation. This green infrastructure project, in the form of a demonstration rain garden, will be located downslope from the city’s historic Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse in Boettler Park, 5300 Massillon Road. The rain garden will consist of native plants designed to temporarily hold, clean and soak in rainwater runoff from the schoolhouse roof as well as provide food and shelter for butterflies, songbirds and other wildlife. The garden will be planted in spring 2021 by the city’s Living Green Task Force as part of on-going effort to raise awareness of the benefits of green infrastructure and water quality.
Paul Ciocca, Living Green Task Force member, Master Rain Gardener and a member of the city’s Engineering staff says that he is excited that Green will have a firsthand example of a sustainable living practice. “The Boettler Park Rain Garden will allow residents and park visitors to see not only how beautiful a rain garden can be, but to learn how they function and are maintained and how everyone can apply this small step in our own backyard to help preserve local waterways and ecosystem.”
The City was awarded $14,025 from MWCD. The entire project is estimated to cost $16,150.
The MWCD grant program, Partners in Watershed Management (PWM), provides maintenance assessment funds to assist local organizations to implement water quality projects, flood reduction and mitigation programs, and watershed education efforts throughout the 18 counties within the MWCD. Since its inception in 2009 this program has provided over $9.5 million in grant funding for 135 projects. More information can be found at www.MWCD.org
